Self Care Project: Chess Pieces by Sydney Haswell

As part of the first assignment in Sara Siestreem’s (Hanis Coos) Theory and Practice: Art and Social Justice Fall 2021 course at PNCA, students were asked to engage in a ritualistic process of self-care they could do, at least temporarily. For undergraduate student Sydney Haswell, this meant committing to practicing an artistic medium that is still relatively new to him, 3-D animation, choosing to render black and white chess pieces over time.

About the Artist: Sydney Haswell (b. 2001) is a digital artist and animator from the Pacific Northwest. Born in Portland, Oregon, he has been fascinated with art and the moving image for as long as he can remember, and decided to pursue hisartistic interests early on. Because of this, much of his artistic education has been self-driven. He is currently pursuing a BFA in Animated Arts from the Pacific Northwest College of Art (2019-2023).
